Coach Spotlight: Talise Greer

As a new coach (Fall 2012 was her first season!), Talise experienced the joy of coaching a GOTR NYC team. Here, she shares her thoughts on why she wanted to coach and the program’s incredible impact:

I decided to coach because…

I wanted to share my love for running with the wonderful girls at Harlem Success Academy. I was raised by my grandmother and I was the only girl in the household. My grandmother was a smart woman and enrolled the entire family in a local track club for the entire year. Needless to say, track practice left all of us too tired to do anything but homework, eat and sleep. Running is a part of me and always will be.

Coaching changed me in that…

I realized that I had something to offer. Meeting the girls twice a week solidified my belief that we can all give something no matter how small.

My favorite moment from last season was…

When the girls had to run laps with no stops.  With school budget cuts, gym is usually the first to go and GOTR is a great program because it gives the girls a safe place to express their feelings and it also addresses their physical needs. There was one girl who had no partner so I decided to run with her. I told her to set the pace so that she could run for the entire duration and she did it! Along the way she kept saying to herself: “I can do this.” It was amazing. The best part was at the end when she wrote me a touching note and it said how grateful she was to have me as a coach because I pushed her to do things she didn’t think she could do.

I hope to instill…

Passion. Running is a passion for me that led to my decision to become a GOTR Running Coach. At the end of the day we all need something that takes us through the highs and lows of life and for me that has been running.

I want the girls to learn…

That we all have a purpose in life and we should take advantage of it.  I also hope they learn that it’s okay to be different, to express your feelings, or just be yourself.
