Kelly Dempsey from Morristown, NJ, is one of our 2015 NYC Marathon SoleMates! Kelly says, "training to be the best SoleMate I can be takes a lot of time," yet she manages to find time for other activities she loves, including spending time with her family, dog, boyfriend, and friends. In addition, Kelly loves going on summer adventures down the shore and hiking and, when she is not training for a race, she plays in a flag football league. What motivated you to run in the NYC Marathon this year?
Last year my father ran in the NYC Marathon and his determination, dedication, and strength motivated me to run one of my own.
How did you get involved with Girls on the Run?
After not receiving a spot in the marathon through the lottery, I started looking up non-profits that I could run with. After a lot of consideration, I decided that I wanted to apply to run with Girls on the Run. The Girls on the Run mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. I am a personal trainer and believe when training girls and women you need to remind them to be proud of themselves while pushing them to be their best self.
What inspires you about being a part of Girls on the Run?
Not only does Girls on the Run tie into my work, but I am so proud to be running with an organization that everyone seems to love. I have heard such positive feedback from moms whose daughters have participated in the program. My favorite part about being a SoleMate is knowing that I am fundraising and running for such a great cause.
When training for a marathon you quickly learn that it is more mental than physical. This compares to the Girls on the Run program because, when you first start running, a 5K seems daunting but you quickly learn that it's accessible if you work hard. When training for a marathon, the goal seems impossible but, if you work hard, stay positive, and live a healthy lifestyle, it is obtainable.
What is your favorite running accessory?
My favorite running accessories are my dog, my Garmin, and energy gels.
