Today we spotlight Allegra Palmer, a SoleMate for the 2016 NYC Half Marathon!
What motivated you to run in the NYC HALF Marathon this year?
I have lived and worked in New York City for almost 4 years and have experienced a tremendous amount of professional and personal growth because of this fantastic city. I chose to run the race for charity because I wanted to give something back to the city that has done so much for me.
How has running been a part of your life?
I wasn't really into sports growing up. I started running right after college when I was living in rural Thailand, mostly because the closest gym was a two hour bus ride away. Six years later, I still don't consider myself an athletic type but running is one of my favorite forms of exercise and my go to way to clear my head.
Why did you choose to support Girls on the Run?
While I lived in Thailand I spent two years as an English teacher for students the same age as the girls in the Girls on the Run program. I saw firsthand how they needed not only language but also life skills. For girls, character, compassion and confidence are just as important as knowledge. Girls on the Run helps girls, who might not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise, develop those life changing skills. [Editor's note: Over 60% of the girls who participate in our program due so at a reduced fee or no fee. Girls come from all backgrounds to participate in Girls on the Run!]
What tip do you have for other SoleMates?
Mix up your training routine, routes and habits! A new running buddy, path or playlist keeps you interested and motivated.
What is your favorite run in NYC?
I live in Williamsburg in Brooklyn so of course running over the bright pink Williamsburg bridge. There are great views of the city and great people watching as well.
