Today we feature Alison, a 2015 NYC Half Marathon SoleMate and dedicated Girls on the Run NYC volunteer!
Tell us about you!
I am from the northwest corner of Connecticut, currently living in Brooklyn and I work in the Education department at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
How has running been part of your life?
I've been running since I can remember, growing up we had a huge back yard so my sisters and I were outside running around all day, we were very active little kids. I did cross country and track and field starting in middle school. I was very competitive, even at that young age but I can't say I really loved running until I got to college. I ran in school because my older sister was an all star three-sport athlete and I wanted to compete in a sport too but at the time, I just wanted to be on stage singing and acting. In college, I started running with a friend who had run multiple half marathons and marathons. Our runs were really fun, it made me love running for myself, not for someone or something else. When I moved back to the city after college, a friend signed me up for NYRR. I began setting goals and actually challenging myself, keeps me motivated! I love pushing myself to see how far I can go. Who doesn't love a PR??
Why did you choose to support Girls on the Run?
I chose to support Girls on the Run because I love what the organization stands for and the work that they do. Running has helped me in so many ways and although I wasn't a participant of the program, I see how the program gives confidence and positive social skills to girls... while running! Amazing. The running community is so supportive and to have a female focused group to support gives me more confidence and inspiration in my running, while having fun!
Thank you for being a Super Star Volunteer & SoleMate, Alison!
