What is Girls on the Run NYC?

Girls on the Run NYC is a positive youth development program for girls between the ages of 8-13. Either before or after school, a Girls on the Run NYC team of 8-20 girls receives twenty sessions over ten weeks from trained coaches. The sessions teach critical life skills while building physical activity into every lesson. At the culmination of their season, girls participate in a celebratory 5k, showing them that they can achieve their goals. In addition, girls lead a community impact project through Girls on the Run NYC, leading and giving back to their communities.

Who can join Girls on the Run NYC?

Girls between the ages of 8-13 within the 5 boroughs of NYC are invited and encouraged to join Girls on the Run NYC. We operate in schools and community sites throughout NYC: A full list can be found at gotrnyc.org/locations.

Where can my daughter participate?

All of our current program sites are listed on gotrnyc.org/locations. You can register your daughter at your school site or, if our program is not in your school, at a nearby community site through gotrnyc.org/registration

Do you have a program for boys?

Girls on the Run NYC serves self-identified girls between the ages of 8-13, working to address inequities in leadership opportunities, athletic participation, and team development. We do not serve boys within our program, but can provide recommendations on partner organizations in the city.

How are you connected to Girls on the Run International?

Girls on the Run NYC is an independent council. Girls on the Run International supports over 200 independent councils through training, resources, research, and curriculum, allowing us to access evidence-based resources on a national level while partnering with local leaders and community members to better serve the girls in our program.

What lesson plans do you use?

Girls on the Run NYC uses a ten week, experienced based curriculum that has been shown to increase social and emotional skills while building healthy physical activity into girls' lives. Our curriculum has been developed and iterated by program leaders in childhood development and national studies show the curriculum's effectiveness. All of our volunteer coaches are trained in implementing the Girls on the Run NYC curriculum.

What do girls learn from being a part of Girls on the Run NYC?

During their time at Girls on the Run NYC, girls learn social and emotional skills alongside health and physical activity. Each lesson builds on the previous session and culminates in a celebratory 5k and community impact project. During the community impact project, girls identify a local need and work to make a difference.

It's so much more than running, as girls come away from the program with new friends, confidence, strength, conflict-resolution skills, and more.

How do you measure the impacts of Girls on the Run NYC?

Girls on the Run NYC assesses our program through coach surveys and evaluations. We have also participated in national studies to show the long-term impacts of our program.

National studies provide strong evidence that Girls on the Run is effective in promoting positive youth development, including season-long and lasting change in competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, physical activity, and life skills. This includes the ability to transfer life skills learned in our program into their school, family, and community. Girls in our program show an increase in strategies for managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others, and making intentional decisions.

When does the program start?

Girls on the Run NYC has two seasons of programming. Our fall season begins in late September/early October, with a 5k scheduled for early December. Our spring season begins in late February/early March with a 5k scheduled for early June. Registration for each season opens one month prior to season start. Who are the coaches?

Our coaches are volunteers from within our communities, including teachers, parents, business owners, community leaders, students, and more. Coaches are trained to deliver the Girls on the Run NYC curriculum over the course of 90 hours, including a day long training session, weekly email check ins, and individual site visits to ensure that they are equipped and supported to lead the best program for their girls. Do you have to be a runner to participate or to coach for Girls on the Run NYC?

You do not have to be a runner to participate in or coach for Girls on the Run NYC! For the majority of the girls in our program, the celebratory 5k at the end of the season is their first 5k, and a huge accomplishment.

Is there a program cost to register?

Girls on the Run NYC provides a sliding scale for registration and we do not turn away any girl who wants to participate. The program costs over $350 per girl and $5,000 per site to run. We are able to offer a sliding scale to subsidize costs for the majority of girls in our program because of individual donations, foundation support, corporate support, and more. What does the program cost cover?

The program cost covers: Over 20 group sessions led by a Girls on the Run-certified coach from a research-based curriculum, lesson handouts and coach supplies, healthy snacks, Girls on the Run t-shirt and water bottle for each participant, Girls on the Run 5k packets and support in the 5k run/walk event, end-of-season certificates, awards and celebrations, Girls on the Run coach training fees, and program assistance to coaches, sites, girls, and parents.

Does the program cost I pay subsidize other girls' program cost?

No, the program costs that you pay does not subsidize other girls in the program. Even the full program cost is heavily subsidized, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Girls on the Run NYC is committed to equity - ensuring that every single girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and run with us. To make that possible, we keep program costs at a minimum and seek donations, foundation, and corporate support to help us maintain a scholarship rate of over 70%.
