At the heart of Girls on the Run NYC are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of hundreds of girls across New York City each year. Our volunteers are dynamic individuals who offer their time, talents and energy to support our mission of empowering girls to become healthy and confident young women. Whether you have just a few hours a year, a season, or every month to help our cause, we would love to hear from you!
We have a variety of ways you can get involved with Girls on the Run NYC, depending on how much time and energy you have to commit to the Girls on the Run! These opportunities include:
- Coaching for Girls on the Run, committing to once or twice a week for the 10 week season
- Committee leadership, serving on a year-round committee to support our organization
- Acting as an Outreach Volunteer, representing GOTR in the community
- One-time volunteer events, ranging from our twice yearly 5k event to helping us in the office
Please specify in your Volunteer Application your interests in terms of opportunity and time commitment. Read below for more details on each volunteer opportunity, and how we will connect with you about your interests.
Want to get involved right away? Visit our Girls on the Run EVENTS page to learn about upcoming events including group runs to get to know GOTR staff & volunteers, fundraising events such as our SoulCycle Charity Ride, and one time volunteer events like joining our Cheer Stations to support our SoleMates charity athletes who fundraise for our cause while participating in endurance events!
Coach with Girls on the Run
When girls work together, they can accomplish remarkable things! As a Coach for Girls on the Run, you’ll receive tools and training to lead a team of girls (3rd-5th grade & 6th-8th grade) toward their goals and help them recognize their limitless potential.
Coaches commit to one or two practice sessions each week for one season (ten weeks). We accept applications for coaching year-round. All coaches must undergo an initial phone interview and complete an online training and in-person training prior to the start of the season. Fall 2017 coaching applications are currently being accepted and phone interviews will take place in July.
For more information, see our Coach FAQ, and for more information on Coach Responsibilities, please review our Head Coach Description & Assistant Coach Description. If you have further questions regarding coaching, email email@example.com.

General Committee Volunteer
If you would like to be involved with the Girls on the Run mission long-term but don't have the flexibility to coach, we have several volunteer opportunities beyond one-time events, such as being a Committee Volunteer and/or an Outreach Volunteer.
Committee Volunteers help our small office with communications, development, SoleMates, volunteer engagement, special events, and more. The commitment varies between committees but every group is essential to the organization.
Outreach Volunteers represent Girls on the Run NYC at fun events, meet new people, and share the Girls on the Run mission! They are trained in all things Girls on the Run, and are the face of Girls on the Run NYC, sharing the mission at a range of events throughout the year. Outreach opportunities are distributed via the Outreach Volunteer listserv and include representing Girls on the Run NYC at race expos, community fairs, school-specific events, Athleta store promotions, etc.
Those interested in becoming a Committee Volunteer and/or an Outreach Volunteer are required to attend a Volunteer Orientation. After you have submitted your volunteer application, you will receive a confirmation email with the next steps to get involved. The confirmation email will include how to sign up for a Volunteer Orientation and an Outreach Volunteer Training.
One-Time Volunteer Opportunities
Get involved one day or event at a time! If you are interested in being part of the Girls on the Run mission and can commit to a one time event, we can use your support!
Our Fall 2017 end of season 5k date is Sunday, December 10th: it's the best day of the year and an amazing "one-time volunteer opportunity" to see our program in action! The 5k is possible because of the energy of our volunteers as running buddies, course marshals, number-one-fans, and more. We have opportunities throughout the year to help with smaller events and office support.
