This week we're shining a spotlight on Kathryn Weigel! Kathryn is from Missouri and will be running her first marathon, the TCS New York Marathon, as a Girls on the Run NYC SoleMate in November!
Why Girls on the Run? I struggled a lot with body image and self-esteem in middle and high school, but running truly helped me to love my body and appreciate all that it can do. When I first learned about Girls on the Run, I immediately fell in love with its mission and have been a supporter ever since.
Is this your first marathon? Yes, this is my first marathon! I'm nervous, but excited!! I've done three half marathons in the past year, but never a full. I'm running my 20-miler this weekend!
Favorite place to run? My favorite place to run is Sugarcreek Reserve in Bellbrook, OH. That is where I had many cross country practices in high school The trails are so peaceful and wonderful, whenever I'm in my home town I make it a point to go for at least a short run there. It also reminds me of all of the wonderful people that running has brought into my life and I'm so grateful for them.
Favorite time of day to run? I'm a morning runner. Always have been. I will run in the evening if I have to, or if I had a particularly bad day at work, but nothing beats that early morning sunrise.
Favorite post-run snack/meal? After a hard workout or long run, I love making eggs with cheese and having toast. Breakfast foods are my favorite. It's nice when I can add in spinach or bacon to my eggs too!
Favorite running accessory? My favorite running accessory is my Garmin watch. It's my first GPS watch and I'm obsessed with it! I can't imagine training for a marathon without it.
Group or solo run? Group or solo run is a hard question for me to answer. I am so grateful for the people that running has brought into my life, I would not be the same without them. Right now, however, I've just moved and started grad school and I've really been enjoying my long solo runs. It's been a nice time for me to decompress, feel free, and not worry about the stresses of grad school
What shoes do you run in? I wear ASICS Gel Nimbus 18. I always run with a special shoe lace charm that says "Within Reach." That was the motto of my high school cross country team my freshman year when I first started running. I got the shoe charm back in high school, but I've moved it on to every pair of running shoes since. Within reach means anything is possible. Anything is within your reach if you work and try for it.
Favorite non-running activity? My favorite non-running activity is probably just hanging out with friends and/or hanging out with my cat, Margot.
Farthest distance you’ve run? The farthest I've ever run so far is 18 miles, but I plan on running 20 this weekend!
