SoleMate Spotlight: Julie Sophonpanich

Today we are shining the spotlight on Julie Sophonpanich, one of our SoleMates for the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon!

Why Girls on the Run? I love that Girls on the Run empowers young girls to take their health into their own hands and find happiness in running. As a young girl, I was never into running or any physical activity for that matter. Running came to me in college when I needed an outlet to clear my head, but I didn't fully embrace it until I moved to New York City. Running has brought so much joy and fulfillment that I want every girl to be able to experience the same.

Is this your first marathon? Yes, the NYC Marathon will be my first. I'm so excited to be running as part of the SoleMates team.

Favorite place to run? I love the path along the East River near where I live. My favorite route is to run down the East River, across the Brooklyn Bridge and back on the Manhattan bridge.

Favorite time of day to run? Morning, especially if I want to run the Brooklyn Bridge and beat all the tour groups. Though sometimes I switch it up and run in the evening, just to catch a glimpse of the sunset from the bridges.

Favorite post-run snack/meal? Shake Shack's ShackBurger is one of my favorite post-run nosh. There's one within walking distance from my apartment. Not necessarily a snack, but I also like to rehydrate after a run with coconut water.

Favorite running accessory? My hat, for sure. Keeps the sun out of my eyes and holds my hair in place.

Group or solo run? Definitely group runs! Having the support and encouragement helps with longer runs. I am surprisingly a chatty runner.

What shoes do you run in? Asics Gel Nimbus.

Favorite non-running activity? I try to go to SoulCycle once or twice a week on my cross training days. It's gentler on the knees, but still gives me a full body workout. The energy in the candle-lit room is extremely infectious; I always leave happier, soaked with sweat from head to toe.

Farthest distance you’ve run? My farthest distance is 13.1 miles. My latest half marathon was the More/Shape women's half marathon this past spring. Girl power was so strong that day.

Inspirational Quote/Words to Live By? "What would you do if you weren’t afraid?" For me, it's running the NYC Marathon.

What’s your Myers-Briggs? The Logistician (ISTJ-A). I took this test along with my coworkers last year and then again this week. The answer is still exactly the same.
