SoleMates Spotlight: Jess Wallin

Today we're shining a spotlight on Jess Wallin! Jess will be a Girls on the Run NYC SoleMate for the TCS New York Marathon in November!

Why Girls on the Run? I was pretty much resigned to believe that you either had athletic skills or you didn't, so when I ran my first 5k, it felt like I had done the impossible. Since then, running has been the major transformative factor in my life, teaching me that nothing was impossible, that hard work would always pay off in the end, and the most important thing you can do is respect yourself, and what you can do on any given day. Running taught me to value the body that never quits on me, even if it didn't always meet other people's ideals. When I learned about Girls on the Run, I immediately fell in love with their mission. I learned so much from running as an adult--teaching girls lessons about confidence, achievement, hard work, and self-acceptance in early in life is so important. I believe that Girls on the Run helps girls grow into physically and emotionally strong and capable young women. And when we raise confident, competent women, everyone benefits.

Is this your first marathon? It's my second! I ran New York City in 2014.

Favorite place to run? I'm on Long Island these days, and winding, quiet, suburban streets are not as much fun as the bridges and greenways of NYC. But I do have access to trails! Especially Connetquot River State Park -- they have a trail almost 9 miles long! That's my favorite place for long runs.

Favorite time of day to run? Mornings! I love feeling like I've accomplished something before the rest of my day has even gotten started. Morning runs give me a real boost for the whole day.

Favorite post-run snack/meal? I usually crave fruit since I'm both hungry and thirsty after running. Lately, it's apples all the way.

Favorite running accessory? Bluetooth headphones and my flip belt.

Group or solo run? Solo. I like having a buddy for long runs, but usually, but usually I prefer to run alone.  I like to dictate my own pace and just focus on how I'm feeling, without worrying about keeping up with anyone else.

What shoes do you run in? Saucony Ride.

Favorite non-running activity? I like to make stuff--cooking, painting, knitting, being able to make something out of nothing is the most satisfying and fun thing.

Farthest distance you’ve run? 26.2 miles.
