Today we're spotlight Jeremy Lakin, a SoleMate for the 2016 NYC Half Marathon. Jeremy is an active Girls on the Run volunteer, and was a SoleMate for the 2015 NYC Half Marathon and a past intern. He will also be running as a SoleMate for Girls on the Run in the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon on November 6!
What motivated you to run in the NYC Half Marathon this year?
I was a SoleMate for GOTR NYC at the last NYC Half Marathon! All of the SoleMates are so encouraging and friendly, one SoleMate I hadn't met even introduced herself to me during the race!....before politely speeding right past me. Like Mia Hamm said, if I ran like a girl may be I could've caught up.
How has running been a part of your life?
I ran my first half marathon my senior year of high school with a few of my friends, my Spanish teacher, and my mom. Since then running has been a fun way to be active with friends and family.
Why did you choose to support Girls on the Run?
I first got involved by volunteering with the practice 5k at the chapter affiliated with my school. Since then I've interned with Girls on the Run NYC, and my cousin Sophie is a Girl on the Run! We've both learned so many valuable lessons through our involvement in GOTR that even as an "adult", I've learned to live a happier, healthier life.
What tip do you have for other SoleMates?
Creativity counts! Most of my fundraising ideas involve things I already enjoy- selling off songs on my running playlist, made funny videos for friends, and baked goods.
What is your favorite running accessory?
My bright pink Girls on the Run shoe laces.
What is your favorite run in NYC?
Tie between the Westside Highway and Prospect Park.
