Today we are spotlighting Jess Butler, a Girls on the Run NYC Coach and a SoleMate for Girls on the Run NYC in the 2016 NYC Half Marathon!

What motivated you to run in the NYC Half Marathon this year?

I was motivated to run the NYC Half this year because I was so inspired by the girls on my team who ran the 5k at the end of our fall season. I really saw them push their limits and challenge themselves and I wanted to do the same.

How has running been a part of your life?

I started running when I moved to New York as a way to meet people and stay active. I've never considered myself athletic so it was really a joy to find an activity that required little more than a pair of shoes and a small dose of determination.

Why did you choose to support Girls on the Run?

I chose to support Girls on the Run after my involvement as a coach at my school in the Fall. Throughout the 12 weeks I saw the girls grow in self-knowledge, endurance, compassion, and confidence - both physical and emotional transformation. All of the girls in our program received financial assistance from Girls on the Run that allowed them to access this amazing opportunity. I'm running to support Girls on the Run so that all girls across New York City will have this same chance.

Why did you choose to support Girls on the Run?

One training tip I have is to build your confidence and motivation through intentional positive thought. Running is so much a test of your mental endurance as well as physical that it really helps to have some mantras and self-affirmations to keep you going. A friend recently sent me this: "Your body will argue that there is no justifiable reason to continue. Your only recourse is to call on your spirit, which fortunately functions independently of logic." - Tim Noakes

What is your favorite running accessory?

My favorite running accessory is my Girls on the Run sunglasses!

What is your favorite run in NYC?

My favorite run in NYC is over the Williamsburg Bridge and then back across the Brooklyn Bridge and returning to my neighborhood, Greenpoint. On a nice day the crowds on the Brooklyn Bridge make it difficult to keep a steady pace but the view is worth it!
