Today we're shining a spotlight on Jade, a SoleMate who's running in the Half Marathon while also raising funds for GOTR programming! Jade, we are excited to see you at the Half Marathon and grateful for your support to help us reach more girls!
Why did you decide to be a SoleMate for the NYC Half Marathon in support of Girls on the Run?
I've admired Girls on the Run ever since I had the opportunity to run one of their 5K as a "Sparkle Runner." It was such an incredible experience to run alongside the girl that I was paired with across the course and cheer her and all of her fellow teammates on. I can still picture her face at the finish line, glowing with pride and infectious positivity. Realizing that I could help other girls get their own victory smiles at their respective finish lines was enough to get me back running as a SoleMate for the NYC half.
What does the Girls on the Run mission mean to you?
I credit so much of who I am today to the patience and guidance of my sports coaches when I was growing up. I am so grateful to be able to support an organization that helps so many young girls feel that same support system and build self-confidence. It's so much more than running!
Is this your first marathon? If no, how many have you run?
It's my fourth half marathon but first one since 2014!
Favorite place to run?
Running down Hudson River Park and following the path past the most southern tip of Manhattan and finishing the last few miles up the East side with an incredible view of the bridges and Brooklyn skyline
Favorite time of day to run?
That really cheesy (amazing) sunset when the reflection off of the Hudson river is almost blinding (oddly specific, but you know what I'm talking about...).
Favorite post-run snack/meal?
Homemade Strawberry, Banana & Peanut Butter protein shake or a cheeseburger... or both, preferably both.
Favorite running accessory?
My purple Beats (over-ear headphones), they're definitely not built for running but double as ear warmers!
Favorite pump-up running song?
Late Night by ODESZA (and Beyonce).
Group or solo run?
I like to have a running buddy.
When you get tired, what makes you keep running?
My running buddy, the goal distance that I've set for the run, (and Beyonce).
Tell us a little bit about your running history!
I always did sports as a kid but didn't really hit my running stride until college (get it, stride?... see what I did there?).
What do you do besides running to keep yourself healthy, confident and joyful?
Spinning, Lagree (it's awesome, look it up!), the occasional hip hop dance class.
What words of encouragement would you share with a girl starting with Girls on the Run?
You're going to learn as much from your coaches as the amazing girls around you, have fun!
Any fundraising tips for fellow SoleMates?
People you may not expect may end up being extremely generous, don't be afraid to ask.... the worst that happens is that they learn about how awesome Girls on the Run is!
